Indeo Codec

Ligos Indeo Codec is dedicated to developers who need to create media for 32-bit operating systems or programs for older versions of Windows.

Not developed anymore since 2004, this codec might be obsolete for some or still necessary for others.

Ligos Indeo Codec is useful, above all, for gamers.

It was one of the first codecs that allowed full-speed playback without any need for hardware acceleration. The codec was mainly targeted at video games developers.

Its popularity declined after the MPEG codec gained popularity, but Ligos was still necessary for cutscene videos in games.

You can use Ligos Indeo Codec if your computer runs on Windows 95, 98, ME, XP, NT and 2000.

The last version of Ligos Indeo Codec 5.11 offered features such as an wavelet compression algorithm for better image quality, playback performance enhancements for Pentium II processor, including smoother, interpolated zoom by 2 playback on processors with MMX technology, better compression at all levels of video quality than previous generation codecs, Indeo video version 5.11 supports encoding with Microsoft DirectShow and progressive download.

The last feature is enabled in Microsoft DirectShow architecture and supported by Internet Explorer 4.0 or above; it offers support for high-quality scalable video for the Internet and intranets.

As for the audio part, Ligos Indeo Codec offers 8:1 compression, support for Standard Multimedia Sample Rates and Support for Stereo and Mono.

This video codec originally developed by Intel does not support the 3.x video codec anymore, though.

Once a successful codec, Ligos Indeo Codec has not been developed anymore for years. It is definitely uncommon for average users to need this codec, but there might be some developers who still need it for some reason, so it continues to be available.
